This post is for my mother, your mother, sister, daughter, friends. For anyone who’s been touched by breast cancer, this post is for you.
When I was little girl, my mother had breast cancer. I did not understand it properly, I was too young. All I knew is that we spent a lot of time visiting mum in hospital, that she was getting treatment that caused her hair to thin and left burn marks on her chest, and that she had a wig “just in case”. And she continued to work as much as she possibly could. Because she had to, to keep food on the table and a roof over our heads.
I am so fortunate to be one of those people whose mother survived. I could not imagine my life without her. I remember being in an interview once and was asked who my hero is. I said “my mother”. The interviewer looked surprised for a minute, then said “Well, that’s a first! Most people say Richard Branson or Michael Jordan!”.
So it was of no surprise that breast cancer is the cause that I find myself putting my time and effort into. Back when I was in corporate, I used to organise the annual Pink Ribbon Lunch in Sydney – a corporate “ladies” lunch to raise money for breast cancer.
Today, I no longer work in corporate so I no longer organise the lunch. However in my own way, I still want to help do what I can to raise awareness through my blog.
And here’s my offering – Pink Ribbon PRETZELS!! These are a breeze to make with a stand mixer! Literally just plonk the ingredients in, then leave it to mix away.
Aren’t the pink KitchenAid stand mixer and the ceramic bowl cute?? Not mine. I have a HOT red one. KitchenAid lent me this one so I could share a Pink Ribbon themed post. And the polka dot ceramic bowl is a limited edition made especially for Breast Cancer Awareness month.
Hmm. I wonder if KitchenAid will notice if I never send it back….. 😉

KitchenAid Australia makes a donation to the Breast Cancer Network Australia (“BCNA”) and Breast Cancer Network New Zealand (“BCNZ”) for every Pink stand mixer, blender, hand mixer or utensil that is sold. The Donations they make are: $25.00 per stand mixer, $10.00 per blender, $5.00 per hand mixer or 10% from every pink utensil.
Those funds are used to help provide women in Australia and New Zealand affected by breast cancer with information, support and care. Right at the bottom of this post, I’ve done a little gallery with direct links to each of the products – one for Australia and one for the US.

PINK PINK PINK!!
October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and many charities run campaigns to raise awareness of breast cancer. In your own small way, you can get involved – whether it’s as simple as making something pink and sharing it with your friends that sparks a conversation about breast cancer, or going “all out” by organising something to raise funds, like putting on a dinner for friends and asking them if they’d like to make a donation of an amount that they would have spent if we’d gone out for dinner instead.
And to give you little inspiration, I’ve rounded up some pink recipes from fellow talented bloggers. No lacking in choice here!! I’ve created a Pinterest board especially for Pink Ribbon with all things pink. Go forth and enjoy for inspiration!

PS These pretzels are a recipe from Food Network which is an American website. Cup and tablespoon measures differ between countries and while the difference is usually not enough to affect most savoury recipes, you have to be very careful with baking recipes because not all recipes will work. I made these pretzels 5 times in 3 days using Australian and UK measures and they worked every time!
In the words of a friend who I gave these to: “Yuuuum! I won’t be eating dinner tonight! Feel ill now!” (From eating too many, not because they made her sick!!) 😉
- 1 cup milk (I used light)
- 1 package active dry yeast (Note 1)
- 3 tbsp (packed) brown sugar (light or dark)
- 2¼ cups + 2 tbsp plain flour (plus more if required)
- 2 tbsp plain butter, softened
- ½ tsp salt
- ⅓ cup baking soda (bi-carb. NOT baking powder)
- 4 cups powdered sugar / soft icing sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 4 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
- 4 to 6 tbsp milk (start with 4 tbsp)
- Pink or red food colouring
- Warm the milk in the microwave on high for 40 seconds.
- Pour into a stand mixer bowl and add the yeast. Leave for 2 minutes.
- Stir in the sugar and 1 cup of flour. Stir in the butter.
- Add remaining flour and salt.
- Use the dough hook and mix in the stand mixer for 3 minutes or until smooth (or knead by hand). The dough should be soft and sticky without getting stuck on your hands when you touch it. Add more flour 1 tbsp at a time if necessary.
- Cover with a tea towel and put in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size (Note 2).
- Preheat oven to 180C/350F. Spray two large baking trays with oil.
- Place the baking soda in a large bowl and add 3 cups of warm tap water. Stir to dissolve baking soda.
- Punch the dough to deflate it and turn onto a work surface. Cut into 8 equal pieces. Take 1 piece, cover the rest with the tea towel.
- Roll it into a rope about 50-55cm/20-22" long, and 2cm/0.8" thick. Bend into a ribbon shape and press down lightly to join where the rope crosses. Set aside and repeat to make 4 ribbons. (Batch 1)
- Use both hands to pick up the ribbon, dunk in the bowl of water then place on the baking tray. Repeat with other 3 so you have 4 pretzels on the tray. After placing this first tray in the oven, start on the 2nd batch.
- Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, or until light golden brown. Rest for a few minutes before transferring to a rack to cool before icing.
- Mix the ingredients together in a microwave proof bowl until you get a soft frosting but not runny (otherwise it will go everywhere!). If it is too thick, add more milk, ½ tbsp at a time.
- Microwave the frosting for 7 seconds. Mix vigorously, then use a teaspoon to generously top the pretzels. Because the frosting is slightly warm, it should melt so the surfaces smooth and run down the side. Use the spoon to even the sides if you want.
- If the frosting cools, microwave it again for 5 to 7 seconds. Then keep frosting!
I have not tried this recipe with instant or rapid rise yeast.
2. In winter, I turn the oven on for 1 minute, then use that as the "warm place" to let the dough rise. The other alternative (because sometimes my oven is occupied) is to turn the dryer on for 1 minute, then put the dough in there!
3. Cups and spoon measures differs between countries so you need to be very careful with baking recipes (savoury recipes are usually ok). This is an American recipe and I made it 5 times (in 3 days!) to ensure it also worked for Australian (where I am) and UK measurements. It worked every time!
